Ragging Off produces a soft mottled feel suitable for any large area such as feature walls or above or below chair rails. Ragging Off is a negative technique, which means you paint on the top coat, and then remove some of this paint with a rag by padding over the surface. Note: The pattern in the rag will impart on the wall surface, so choose your tool well, we recommend muslin cloth for a rag.
Step 1 Apply a base coat using Bristol Easy Living Low Sheen, Satin or Bristol Opulence in a colour of your choice by brush or roller, and allow to dry.
Step 2 Mix a top coat using Bristol Scumble and Bristol Easy Living Low Sheen, Satin or Bristol Opulence. It is recommended to mix the top coat in a bucket and pour into a roller tray when ready to paint. Mix 1 part scumble to 1 part paint, or for a more translucent effect increase the ratio of Scumble to 2:1 or 3:1.
Step 3 Apply top coat liberally over the base coat with a brush or roller. Work in an area of around 1 metre sqaure. Bristol Scumble has a work time of 10 – 20 minutes, so it is advisable to work quickly.
Step 4 Dampen rag to soften and scrunch in a large ball. Firmly pat the rag over the top coat turning the rag frequently to produce random patterns. Work in an area of around 1 metre square when Ragging Off a large surface and ensure patterns join evenly. You have the ability to change the pattern within 10 – 20 minutes of applying the top coat.
