Initial Preparation
Before you start:
Inspect the surfaces to determine defects that exist and the
tools you will need to fix them. Determine what types of finishes
have been previously used to help you select the correct primer,
sealer, undercoat or topcoat required.
Make the surfaces easily accessible by clearing the room as
completely as possible. Remove pictures, nails, hooks, curtains and
rods, tables, chairs, light fittings, door handles etc. Gather up
bulky furniture in the centre of the room and cover it with a drop
cloth. Mask skirting boards, particularly if stained or varnished
to protect against paint spots.
Preparing previously painted surfaces:
Wash to remove all dirt dust grease and grime. Fill holes and
cracks with a suitable filler and sand smooth. Surface must be
clean, dry and free from any contamination. Prepare and spot seal
bare substrates as per new work instructions below. Follow
additional instructions on the paint can for specific surface
types.
